A Doula is a trained professional who provides physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth. A doula is not a medical professional and can not give medical advice. However, they play a key role in ensuring that the birthing person feels supported and informed throughout the process.
-
While doctors and midwives handle the medical aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, doulas offer support, guidance, comfort, and advocacy throughout your entire journey. A doula works exclusively for you—not an institution, insurance company, or medical practice.
-
You can hire a doula at any time or stage in your pregnancy, it is never too late or too early to benefit from doula support. I recommend seeking support around your second trimester so that you have adequate time to explore all options, prepare for your desired birthing experience, and have time to become acquainted with your doula!
A postpartum doula can also be hired at any time during your pregnancy but most people do so in the final months of pregnancy. This allows the doula to get familiar with your birth plan, provide support and information ahead of time, and be ready to step in immediately after the birth.
-
Studies have shown that having a doula present during labor can lead to shorter labor times, fewer medical interventions, including cesarean sections, increased breastfeeding success, and increased satisfaction with the birth experience.
-
Absolutely! A Doula's role is complementary to your partners, not a replacement! We encourage partners to participate in the birthing process in meaningful and useful ways. Guidance and support from a doula can in fact empower partners to feel more confident caring for their loved one, as well as allow for them to take occasional breaks for self care.
